Your Body Was Never the Problem
Your Body Was Never the Problem
Your Body Was Never the Problem
On fit, measurements, and the relief of wearing something that was made to meet you where you are.
There is a sentence I hear in fittings more often than I wish I did.
“My body is difficult.”
Sometimes she says it as an apology. Sometimes as a warning. She points to the places she has learned to hide and explains which cuts she cannot wear, which colors are not for her, and which parts of herself the piece will need to correct.
But her body is not difficult.
It has simply spent years being asked to fit clothing that was never made with her in mind.
The number on the label is not a verdict
Ready-to-wear clothing has to be created around a standard. It is designed to fit as many people as possible reasonably well.
But reasonably well is not the same as made for you.
Two women can wear the same size and have completely different proportions. The same dress can pull in one place, fall flat in another, and make both women believe something is wrong with them.
There is not.
A measurement is information. Nothing more.
It tells me where the fabric needs to go, how the piece should move, and what I need to consider while I am making it. It is not a judgment of your body and it is certainly not a judgment of you.
The piece should adjust to you
When I create something custom, I am not trying to persuade your body into a predetermined shape.
I am watching how the fabric falls on you.
Where it needs softness.
Where it needs structure.
How you move when you are not thinking about being watched.
That last part matters.
A piece can look beautiful while you are standing perfectly still and become impossible the moment you sit down, lift your arms, or live an actual life inside it.
I want the piece to belong to your life, not only to the photograph.
So if something does not sit correctly, I change the garment.
I do not ask you to change your body.
The moment the apology stops
There is usually a point in the fitting when the conversation becomes quieter.
She stops explaining what is wrong with her. She stops pulling at the fabric. She begins looking at the piece instead of inspecting herself.
Sometimes she turns sideways. Sometimes she walks across the room and comes back. Sometimes she simply looks into the mirror for a little longer than she expected to.
That is the moment I care about.
Not because the garment has hidden her perfectly.
Because she has stopped believing she needs to hide.
The purpose of made-to-measure clothing is not to create a more acceptable body. It is to create a piece that understands the body already standing in front of me.
You do not need to arrive at a fitting smaller, taller, younger, or more certain of yourself.
You only need to arrive as you are.
I will make the piece meet you there.
