What Italy and France Taught Me About Design

Sometimes inspiration comes from fabric. Sometimes it comes from a place that changes the way you see everything.

Travel has always inspired the way I create.

During my time in Europe, I had the opportunity to experience two places that influenced me in completely different ways: Lake Como in Italy and Grasse in the South of France.

I didn't leave either place with a collection planned in my head.

Instead, I came home with something much more valuable.

A different way of seeing.

What Lake Como Taught Me

Lake Como made me pay attention to beauty in the everyday.

The water, mountains, architecture, changing light, and colors surrounding me became part of the experience of simply being there.

I found myself noticing details differently.

How fabric moved in the breeze.

How colors changed depending on the time of day.

How something could feel elegant without being complicated.

Living there encouraged me to slow down and pay closer attention to the details of what I was creating.

Then Came Grasse

Grasse offered a completely different kind of inspiration.

Known for its connection to perfume, the experience wasn't only about what I could see. It reminded me how deeply our senses are connected to memory and emotion.

A scent can take you somewhere.

A color can remind you of a moment.

The feel of a fabric against your skin can completely change the way you experience what you're wearing.

That idea stayed with me.

Because I don't want to create clothing that is only beautiful to look at.

I want to create something you experience.

Bringing the Inspiration Home

Now that I'm back home in Colorado, I can see how those experiences have become part of the way I approach design.

Not literally.

I'm not creating a dress covered in Lake Como landscapes or a scarf inspired by a bottle of perfume.

It's much more subtle than that.

It's in the colors I'm drawn to.

The fabrics I choose.

The way I think about movement.

The time I'm willing to spend getting a detail right.

And especially the way I think about how a woman should feel when she puts on something created specifically for her.

Travel gave me inspiration, but coming home gives me the opportunity to turn that inspiration into something new.

Lake Como will always be part of the FYETKA story.

Grasse will be part of it too.

And now, back in Colorado, I get to discover what comes next.
